January 17th, 2023 VFW Hall Dinner Meeting Speaker John Shaner
January 17 @ 5:30 pm - 9:00 pm PST| $25.00
- This event has passed.
The January 17th WFFC Dinner Meeting will be at the Mercer Island VFW Hall with John Shaner speaking to us via zoom about the history of the House Of Hardy.
John has been an avid angler for as long as he can remember and caught his first trout on a fly he tied myself in 1965. He grew up on the shores of Skaneateles Lake in the Finger Lakes region of New York State and was fishing the Catskill Rivers as soon as I could drive.
The gift of a fly-tying kit when I was 8 set me on the road to becoming a fly tier. While I am primarily self-taught, I have studied many different fly dressing techniques and have been privileged to have sat at the elbow of many famous fly tiers. Another of his passions is collecting classic fly tackle and angling books.
He started in the fly-fishing business in 1985 and has managed fly shops, guided, and worked as a sales representative for The Orvis Co. and Cortland Line, and since 2008, has been associated with Hardy of Alnwick, England.
He is a member of The Anglers’ Club of New York, The Fly Fishers’ Club of London, The Theodore Gordon Fly Fishers, The Fly Fishers’ Club of Harrisburg, and the FFI and also serves as a Trustee of the Catskill Fly Fishing Center & Museum.
January is Awards month, and we will be recognizing members and possibly others for the year just ended, 2022. We expect to be presenting the Empty Creel Award for service to the Club, the Tommy Award for service to the community, the Letcher Lambuth Award for significant contributions to the sport, and other Awards. The awards will be presented by Bill Neal, the WFFC Awards Committee Chair.
A President’s Dinner Choice, for $25, will be served with a Bartender serving beer and wine drinks for a $5 donation.
Location: The Mercer Island Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 5760 is at 1836 72nd Ave SE, Mercer Island, WA 98040. Please see the google map below for directions.
