Fished Cooper lake, near Roslyn and Salmon Le Sac on Friday. Joined by Larry Karlovich. A beautiful lake, clear water, with the Cooper river entering on one end, and exiting the other. 140 acres at 3000 feet elevation. Boat required! No motors! Good road and boat launch, well signed from Roslyn.
Tons, I mean, TONS of ten inch put and take rainbows! Fish on a dozen casts in a row. If one falls off, another grabs before you can pick up the cast! Moved around the lake fishing over weed beds, looking for the bigger brown trout in the lake. Found the best fishing along the near shore (boat launch side) at the northern end. Getting the fly down over the weeds in 6 or 8 feet of water did the trick. (if a little rainbow didn’t grab it!) Browns really liked a black wooley bugger or marabou leech on a slow sinker. I ended up with 7 from 12 to 20 inches, all with amazing colors, and quite strong. Had the classic “slam and snap!” on an olive clouser. The large yellow flash being my clue as to the new owner of said fly.
The scenery is great, and the lake is pristine, even though popular. I would fish it mid week if possible. I shall return…
