The federal courts are pushing the BPA and others to do more to save the Columbia River salmon and steelhead runs. The 3 Snake River dams, which don’t have fish ladders, are said to be significant obstacles to re-rehabilitating the size of the returning runs. It has been said that economic analysis of the Snake river shows that the benefits to farmers and other shippers using the river is less than the costs of maintaining the waterway and the dams and that therefore tearing down the dams would actually be beneficial to taxpayers. How beneficial we might ask, and if these dams were torn down how much of an impact would it have on the anadromous runs on the Snake and the Columbia itself. Joseph Bogaard, who lives here in Seattle, has been a longtime foe of these dams and will give us a detailed analysis of this problem. He will also weigh in on how much influence our new president might have on obstructing a movement to get rid of the dams.
