Lael Johnson of Fly Gyde will be speaking about “Fishing Glacial Waters”—The Queets, Hoh, Kitimat, and Santa Cruse in South America.

Fishing Glacial rivers present the angler challenges a river with excellent visibility typically does not. Structure and other current differences are not as easy to read for the untrained eye, and this will take time to get past the learning curve. Steelhead and Salmon have a difficult time finding your fly in that type of condition as well, so when fishing glacial water, it is essential to understand where fish lay with the added watercolor. Unfishable sections of water on non-glacial streams can be your target when fishing a glacial system that allows for comfort in the shallows. After staking your claim on a run, proper fly selection starts with an understanding of the contrast your materials have against the water when selecting rivers such as the Olympic National Park’s Queets & Hoh, British Columbia’s Kitimat, or Argentinas Santa Cruz River.
