SUMMARY:March 2026 Club Dinner Meeting Featuring John McMillan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our March 2026 monthly club meeting with John R. McMillan! \nJohn is President of The Conservation Angler and a fisheries scientist with nearly three decades of experience studying salmon and steelhead. Raised along the Washougal River in a fly-fishing family led by his father\, Bill\, his fascination with wild fish began in Pacific Northwest rivers and eventually carried him underwater—snorkeling among salmonids—into a career devoted to understanding their biology and resilience. \nHe has conducted research for the U.S. Forest Service\, the Hoh Indian Tribe\, Wild Salmon Center\, and NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center\, where he played a key scientific role in the Elwha River dam removal project\, documenting fish populations before and after the dams were removed. He later served as Science Director for Trout Unlimited’s Wild Steelhead Initiative. \nHis work focuses on the ecology and life-history diversity of steelhead and rainbow trout and how that diversity underpins population resilience. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers\, books\, and essays on fish and rivers. \nSince becoming President of The Conservation Angler in December 2024\, John has worked to translate science into action—developing research initiatives\, educating anglers\, and advancing conservation solutions for wild steelhead and salmon. He lives on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula with his wife\, Laurel\, and continues to study fish in the rivers that inspire him. \n\n___________________________________________ \n Same meeting venue: The Hall at Occidental\nThe Hall at Occidental\, 589 Occidental Avenue South\, Seattle. \nHere’s the lowdown on the location: \n\nIt’s directly across the street (west side) from the northwest corner of Lumen Field (where the Seahawks play).\nIt’s kitty-corner from that big parking lot to the north.\nThe area is well-lit\, secure\, and has been seriously upgraded with fancy condos and offices—if you’ve been to a game lately\, you know the drill. It’s not technically downtown or Pioneer Square. It’s its own cool spot.\nYou can get here from basically anywhere (I-90\, I-5\, 99\, Light Rail\, bus\, surface streets—the whole kit and caboodle).\nParking: Lumen Field lots close early (6 pm!)\, so don’t count on them. Good news is there’s convenient parking right next door. Just be sure to give yourself some extra time to get settled!\n\nThe venue is run by the same folks who run a bunch of beer halls (which\, let’s face it\, is a perfect spot for a fly fishing club!). We’ll be upstairs in a private mezzanine that seats 40 people. \nGET YOUR NAME ON THE LIST EARLY TO GRAB A SEAT! \nDinner:\nJust like before – buy your own pub grub – the meeting itself is FREE! You can’t beat that anywhere in Seattle!! \n(Heads up: they tack on a mandatory 20% gratuity and 10.35% tax\, so factor that in.) \n We Need You There!\nThis new venue is a test for us\, and it’s a test for The Hall! We need a solid turnout to show them we’re a good partner—translation: we need to show them we spend enough on grub and drinks to make it worth their while. \nSo please\, sign up as early as you can and show up! We need to pack the room to make these dinner meetings a regular thing!

SUMMARY:Corbett Lake Lodge\, Merritt\, BC Canada
DESCRIPTION:The WFFC will be having an Outing at Corbett Lake Lodge in May of 2026.  Based on my initial inquiry\, Corbett Lake Lodge currently has availability for 10-12 members of our Club staying in the Cedar Cabins from Friday\, May 8th through Friday\, May 15th 2026.  However\, I will only be staying in one of the Cedar Cabins with my wife for 3-nights on Friday to Sunday\, 5/8-10/26 with a departure on Monday\, 5/11/26. \nWFFC members will be responsible for making their own reservations based on the number of booking nights required.   It will be important to make your reservations as soon as possible because the Lake Cabins are basically fully booked for most of the season and the Cedar Cabins could also be in short supply.   The Cedar Cabins sleep 2 to 5 people which will allow members to share in the nightly rooming costs. \nAdditional information about Corbett Lake Lodge can be found at their website at https://www.corbettlake.ca/  On the website you can click on “inquire today” and you will be directed to a page for contacting Corbett Lake Lodge with your reservation information.  Make sure that you include the date range of May 8th through May 15th 2026 for the number nights that you wish to book.  You should also mention that you are with the WFFC and my name\, Mike Nolan\, as the contact. \nCorbett Lake Lodge contact information: \n250-378-4334\ncorbettlake@gmail.com\nwww.corbettlake.ca

SUMMARY:Lake Hannan Outing
DESCRIPTION:Lake Hannan Outing: A Private Lowland Gem\nThis is a rare one. We’ve been granted exclusive access to Lake Hannan at Camp Hamilton—a pristine\, undeveloped lowland sanctuary that is strictly off-limits to the public. Through our relationship with the Catholic Church\, the gate is open for one day only to chase some of the prettiest trout in the county. \nThe Tactical Report: Gear & Lines\nHannan isn’t an over-pressured community pond; it’s a healthy\, “old-school” West-side fishery. Focus on subtle presentations rather than heavy dredging. \n\nThe Go-To Line: A Slow Intermediate or Hover line ($0.5–1.5\text{ ips}$) is the gold standard. It keeps your flies in the strike zone just above the weed line without snagging.\nFor the Deep Bins: If the fish move to the center of the lake\, a Type 3 full sink ($3.0–4.0\text{ ips}$) will help you reach the bottom of the ledge.\nThe Surface: Keep a dry line rigged. If the sun breaks through\, watch for a localized chironomid bite or an intermittent mayfly hatch.\n\nRecommended Fly Patterns\n\nSub-Surface: Woolly Buggers (Black\, Olive\, or Maroon) in sizes 8–12. Carey Specials and Olive Soft Hackles are also killers for the “cutt-bows.”\nThe Hatch: Zebra Midges (Black/Silver) in sizes 14–18\, or a Parachute Adams (14–16) for surface activity.\nThe Shallows: Braided-butt or Marabou Damsel Nymphs in Olive (sizes 10–12). These are the primary food source for Brookies patrolling the shoreline weeds.\n\nShore-Side Hospitality\nWhen your casting arm needs a break\, head to the bank for a classic club spread: \n\nThe Main: The Club is providing hot\, hearty chili and non-alcoholic refreshments.\nThe Potluck: Please bring an appetizer\, side dish\, or dessert to share!\nStewardship Note: Camp Hamilton enforces a strict NO ALCOHOL policy. We are guests on private ground; let’s show them the utmost respect to ensure we’re invited back next season.\n\nLogistics & Boat Sharing\n\nWhen: Saturday only\, 8:00 AM – 4:00 PM.\nBoat Sharing: If you have an extra seat in your boat or pram\, please note it in the “I Will Assist With” sign-up so we can get everyone off the bank and onto the lake.\n\nDirections to the Launch\n\nTake Woodinville/Duvall Road to the end.\nTurn North on SR 203 through Duvall.\nPass the first Cherry Valley Road; continue to the second Cherry Valley Road (look for the one slanting uphill on the right).\nFollow it East toward Lake Fontal for several miles.\nWatch for the Camp Hamilton sign\, head through the yellow gate\, and follow the road to the Hannan launch area.\n\n\nTight lines—see you at the water’s edge!
