SUMMARY:April 2026 Club Dinner Meeting Featuring John McMillan
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our April 2026 monthly club meeting with John R. McMillan! \nJohn is President of The Conservation Angler and a fisheries scientist with nearly three decades of experience studying salmon and steelhead. Raised along the Washougal River in a fly-fishing family led by his father\, Bill\, his fascination with wild fish began in Pacific Northwest rivers and eventually carried him underwater—snorkeling among salmonids—into a career devoted to understanding their biology and resilience. \nHe has conducted research for the U.S. Forest Service\, the Hoh Indian Tribe\, Wild Salmon Center\, and NOAA’s Northwest Fisheries Science Center\, where he played a key scientific role in the Elwha River dam removal project\, documenting fish populations before and after the dams were removed. He later served as Science Director for Trout Unlimited’s Wild Steelhead Initiative. \nHis work focuses on the ecology and life-history diversity of steelhead and rainbow trout and how that diversity underpins population resilience. He has authored numerous peer-reviewed scientific papers\, books\, and essays on fish and rivers. \nSince becoming President of The Conservation Angler in December 2024\, John has worked to translate science into action—developing research initiatives\, educating anglers\, and advancing conservation solutions for wild steelhead and salmon. He lives on Washington’s Olympic Peninsula with his wife\, Laurel\, and continues to study fish in the rivers that inspire him. \n\n___________________________________________ \n Same meeting venue: The Hall at Occidental\nThe Hall at Occidental\, 589 Occidental Avenue South\, Seattle. \nHere’s the lowdown on the location: \n\nIt’s directly across the street (west side) from the northwest corner of Lumen Field (where the Seahawks play).\nIt’s kitty-corner from that big parking lot to the north.\nThe area is well-lit\, secure\, and has been seriously upgraded with fancy condos and offices—if you’ve been to a game lately\, you know the drill. It’s not technically downtown or Pioneer Square. It’s its own cool spot.\nYou can get here from basically anywhere (I-90\, I-5\, 99\, Light Rail\, bus\, surface streets—the whole kit and caboodle).\nParking: Lumen Field lots close early (6 pm!)\, so don’t count on them. Good news is there’s convenient parking right next door. Just be sure to give yourself some extra time to get settled!\n\nThe venue is run by the same folks who run a bunch of beer halls (which\, let’s face it\, is a perfect spot for a fly fishing club!). We’ll be upstairs in a private mezzanine that seats 40 people. \nGET YOUR NAME ON THE LIST EARLY TO GRAB A SEAT! \nDinner:\nJust like before – buy your own pub grub – the meeting itself is FREE! You can’t beat that anywhere in Seattle!! \n(Heads up: they tack on a mandatory 20% gratuity and 10.35% tax\, so factor that in.) \n We Need You There!\nThis new venue is a test for us\, and it’s a test for The Hall! We need a solid turnout to show them we’re a good partner—translation: we need to show them we spend enough on grub and drinks to make it worth their while. \nSo please\, sign up as early as you can and show up! We need to pack the room to make these dinner meetings a regular thing!

SUMMARY:November 2025 Club Dinner Meeting Featuring John Shewey
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our November 2025 monthly club meeting with John Shewey! \nJohn Shewey has been accused of being a deadbeat slacker\, but he steadfastly refutes such charges and insists instead that he is a lifelong fly-fishing addict. He usually admits to being the editor-in-chief of American Fly Fishing\, unless you are mad at the magazine\, in which case John is likely to deny any involvement. His long career as a writer and photographer has produced countless magazine articles and about 20 books. \nA couple of his books are pretty good. John’s most recent titles are Spey Flies\, Their History and Construction\, Classic Steelhead Flies\, and The Hummingbird Handbook. When not plunging into a cold river over his wader tops in pursuit of summer-run steelhead or wearing out boot leather exploring tiny trout streams in the desert\, John spends considerable time on the verge of cardiac arrest following his Weimaraner around Oregon’s chukar country. \nSo\, come together for John’s presentation on fly fishing for steelhead! \n\n🍻 New dinner meeting venue: The Hall at Occidental\nThis is our second dinner meeting at the new spot: The Hall at Occidental\, 589 Occidental Avenue South\, Seattle. We’ll be upstairs in a private mezzanine that seats 40 people. \nGET YOUR NAME ON THE LIST EARLY TO GRAB A SEAT! \nDinner:\nJust like last month\, the meeting itself is FREE! \nHowever\, the food and drinks are “no-host\,” meaning you cover your own tab. You can order whatever you want off the Hall’s huge menu—dinner\, appetizers\, beer\, soda\, whatever your heart desires! No more pre-set meals!! \n(Heads up: they tack on a mandatory 20% gratuity and 10.35% tax\, so factor that in.) \n💪 We Need You There!\nThis new venue is a test for us\, and it’s a test for The Hall! SUMMARY:Wet Buns Outing
DESCRIPTION:Our annual celebration of the drizzle season\, once again – finally! Normal Northwest weather! Time to bask in the dark of the cold and wet again!!! \nBut even better … \nChums are staging in the shallow estuaries\, the resident Coho are there for those who know where to cast\, and the biggest sea runs are looking for that last meal before a long winter in a little stream. \nCioppino (Fisherman’s Stew)\, served with toasted bread\, always tastes best around a big fire. This is the best “Outing” meal of the year as far as many are concerned\, and is a recommended must-do trip. We will gather at the group camp area at Penrose Point State Park\, with dinner prepping starting around 4:00. I know that cuts into some fishing time\, but it gets dark early these days. We need a few volunteers to crack crabs\, chop fish\, shell shrimp\, etc. \nBring your favorite cold-weather appetizer or dessert\, and the club does the rest. RSVP for headcount and bring a sturdy bowl and spoon for dinner. \nThe fishing can be done from beaches\, but is done better from a boat. Launches at Vaughn Bay\, Allyn\, Latimer’s Landing\, Treasure Island\, and Von Geldern Cove are all good jumping-off spots for South Sound fly fishing. \nOrange and white flies – along with olive clousers and dali lamas – work well. Chums like anything small and green. \nSo\, cover your buns\, dress warm\, and join us for this fun and delicious event. We here at the club laugh at this kind of weather. Because we’re rugged individualists (like everyone else) and like our fish wet and cold\, don’t we? \nMembers\, if you can take another member in your boat to fish at the outing\, please acknowledge this in the “I will assist with” in the RSVP so that we can organize members to fish with you.

SUMMARY:October 2025 Club Dinner Meeting Featuring Greg Shimek
DESCRIPTION:Join us for our October 2025 monthly club meeting featuring Greg Shimek in Seattle’s old Pioneer Square at The Hall at Occidental! (see note below) \n\nGreg is a member of the Coastal Cutthroat Commission and Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group. \nIn addition Greg’s a retired telecommunications executive and fly fishing enthusiast. He was born and raised in Shelton\, and grew up on Hood Canal\, building a passion for clean water\, healthy fish and good habitat. Along with his service with the Hood Canal Salmon Enhancement Group\, he has taken an interest in Washington’s coastal cutthroat populations\, working with WDFW on research in Puget Sound. \nGreg is a past president of Puget Sound Fly Fishers and is currently the group’s conservation chair. In 2019\, he received the prestigious Bill Mackay Conservation Award from the Washington State Council of Fly Fishers International. \n— \nA note from our Club President: \nAnd now\, for something completely different! \nWe are pleased to announce that our venue for our October 21stmeeting will be The Hall at Occidental\, 589 Occidental Avenue South\, Seattle.  This venue is directly across the street\, west\, from the northwest corner of Lumen Field and catty corner to the massive north parking lot there.  It is adjacent to the newly renovated Friends of the Waterfront Plaza.  It is not a part of downtown Seattle or of Pioneer Square. This area is open\, well lit\, and benefits from continuous security patrols\, well-maintained public spaces\, and a strong partnership between local businesses\, city services\, and community organizations.  If you’ve been down there for a game\, you know the nearby area has been developed into swanky condos and office buildings. \nThe Hall can be reached via I-90\, I-5\, Highway 99\, Light Rail\, bus\, and Seattle surface streets.  You can get there from anywhere. There is an immense amount of parking. \nThe restaurant itself is part of the Hall Group\, which runs four beer halls on Queen Anne\, Capitol Hill\, in Kirkland\, and at Occidental.  (It seems fitting that a fly club would meet in a beer hall.) We will be upstairs in the private mezzanine at Occidental\, which has a capacity of 40. \nPlease sign up early to assure yourself a seat. \nAnd for something even more different\, this meeting is FREE!  Now\, I know what you’re thinking\, there is no such thing as a “free lunch\,” or in this case a free dinner.  And you would be correct.  The Club will not charge for this first meeting.  And\, all food and beverages will be provided on a “no-host” basis.  Each of you may order what you wish off the Hall’s extensive food and beverage menu and you will receive and pay your own check.  You have the personal choice of dinner and drinks.  (Mandatory 20% gratuity and 10.35% tax).  No more one-size-fits-all meal. \nI’m very excited about this new venue.  It has great access for all\, copious parking\, and we get away from the rubber chicken buffet.  Let’s give this a good try. \nIt is important that we produce a good turnout for this meeting.  This venue is an experiment for us and it also is an experiment for The Hall.  We need a good showing – translation\, we need to show them that we are a good partner in terms of what we spend for food and drink.  So please sign up as early as you can and come to this meeting.  We need good attendance to make this work. \nThe usual schedule applies.  Wet Fly at 5:30\, dinner 6:15 -7:00\, business and program 7:00 – 8:30. \nDan
